Afari Skincare was founded on three guiding principles: to discover
a ground-breaking, local ingredient, create an effective yet simple routine,
and empower women—from those sustainably harvesting our hero ingredient to our
customers experiencing Afari’s transformative effects.
Founder’s Story
Margaux has spent over 15 years in the beauty industry. She’s the
former beauty editor of GLAMOUR magazine, beauty contributor to morning TV’s Expresso
show and co-founder of rubybox, South Africa’s first try-before-you-buy subscription
beauty box. After successfully exiting rubybox, she turned to nature to find
something special that could showcase SA’s biodiversity to the rest of the
world.
“When searching for a skincare range that could tackle my
fine lines and growing pigmentation, I wanted a streamlined approach—effective
yet simple. Beyond my own needs, I wanted to develop something that could make
a meaningful difference for others too. After many years, numerous ‘no’s’ and
countless ways of being told ‘you’ll never find that ingredient’, Afari was
born.”
- Margaux Knuppe, Founder
Rooted in tradition and refined by science
In a continent celebrated for its healing heritage and abundant biodiversity, we embarked on a journey to find an indigenous botanical with regenerative skin benefits.
The collaboration between female harvesters in rural Limpopo and pioneering scientific research led us to Bulbine frutescens, a regenerative succulent native to the dry valleys of Southern Africa.
Its gel-like sap, long used by generations of South Africans for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, is now backed by cutting-edge scientific research.
Clinically proven to stimulate collagen synthesis—a vital process for maintaining firm,
youthful skin—Bulbine frutescens is the heart of Afari Skincare, representing a perfect synergy of nature, science, and female empowerment.
We are deeply committed to caring for your skin—and making a meaningful impact.
The skincare you use daily should not only enhance your life but also uplift others. Every Afari product sold supports the women who sustainably harvest our ingredients in rural Limpopo. By choosing Afari, you help keep this cycle of empowerment and positive change alive.
